Tanoto Foundation played a key role in the foundation of the new Philanthropy Asia Alliance recently launched by Temasek Trust at the Philanthropy Asia Summit in Singapore on 30 September 2022. Joining the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dalio Philanthropies, Li Ka Shing Foundation and four companies of Sinar Mas, Tanoto Foundation has committed US$25 million to the alliance over the next five years, contributing to the total amount of US$200 million in initial committed funding to kick start its initiatives. The Alliance serves as a forum to help drive collective action by philanthropic groups in Asia, with the potential to create meaningful social, educational and healthcare impact. At the summit organised by Temasek Trust and Temasek Foundation, Tanoto Foundation also issued its own call to action to other organisations to replicate its early childhood development (ECD) programmes in other parts of Asia. Presenting to an audience of philanthropists and thought leaders at the summit, Tanoto Foundation’s Head of Strategic Planning and Partnerships, Michael Susanto, and its Head of Early Childhood Education and Development, Eddy Henry spoke about how ECD is currently underdeveloped in many countries and how Tanoto Foundation’s own experience can offer a usable model. Tanoto Foundation recognises the importance of proper caregiving and teaching in a child’s first 1000 days and the significant impact this can have on a child’s life. To this end, it adopted the Nurturing Care Framework, developed by WHO, UNICEF and World Bank Group, and created a contextualised, localised, and highly implementable model of primary caregiving and care centres. Under a pilot, it has established 23 Rumah Anak SIGAP centres in Indonesia and 39 HOPE centres in China focusing on ECD and this has impacted more than 5,000 children, while providing support to numerous caregivers and parents.
