What are mental models and how do your students use them?

Mental models are the frameworks we build in our mind that allow us to make sense of the world around us. Build from our experiences, they often can contain conflicting information, and ideas that aren't quite right. Changing mental models is hard. This video describes mental models, why it's important to know the models your students are using, and how to begin guiding good model formation, with the NGSS in mind. Based on Jean Piaget's concept of disequilibrium -- accommodating and equilibrating -- I describe mental models and how to discover what your students are thinking, and use that to guide instruction.
