ROWING TECHNIQUE for BEGINNERS - AVOID These Common Rower MISTAKES

Olympian and Coach, Luke Walton Teaches You How to Row on the Rowing Machine in 15 Minutes 👉🏻Want one on one help with your rowing technique and training? Contact Us: https://roweracademy.com/contact-us/ If you have never taken a stroke on the rowing machine before, or if you are relatively new to rowing, by the end of this video you will be able to take confident, well sequenced rowing strokes, while avoiding the common mistakes many novice rowers fall victim to. Beyond the sequence of the drive and recovery, Coach Walton will walk you through the two major mistakes novices make, and will teach how to avoid them. He will also show you how to achieve proper body angle at the catch and finish of the stroke, as well as teach you the best way to maintain great posture throughout the rowing cycle. Coach Walton teaches you the rowing stroke, starting at the finish. Arms out, body forward, legs up as you roll forward on the recovery of the stroke. Once you arrive at the front end of the rowing stroke its legs drive, body swinging open, and arms squeezing to the body across the drive phase of the stroke. “Arms, body legs, legs, body, arms.” Coach Walton will then teach you to break down these portions of the stroke, robotically to start. And, as you become more comfortable in the order of the recovery and the drive, he will encourage you to blend the edges of each movement with the purpose of creating smooth, powerful, efficient, and cohesive strokes. Coach Walton also addresses and corrects the two most common mistakes novices make when learning the rowing stroke: 1. On the recovery phase, novices tend to allow their knees to start to rise on the recovery BEFORE the arms are out and the body is forward. Proper sequence requires the legs rise only AFTER the arms and body are forward. 2. On the drive phase, novices tend to drive while utilizing all their body parts (legs, body, arms) at the same time. Proper drive mechanics require driving with the legs, then body, then arms to maximize acceleration and to address the rowing stroke utilizing your muscle groups from largest to smallest (legs to arms). Beyond discussion of the sequence of events and these common pit falls, your focus on your posture throughout the rowing stroke is vitally important to how well you will row. Good posture comes from sitting up from down low (a strong core and strong low back), avoiding leaning too far back, sinking down, and sitting back on your butt. Good posture and position takes place with a body angle the equivalent of 11 and 1 o’clock. 11 o’clock at the front end, 1 o’clock at the finish. Even if you have mastered the sequence of the rowing stroke, if you don’t match it with good posture, you will not be taking your best, most powerful, and most efficient strokes. Bad posture creates weakness in your stroke, makes it difficult to breathe, and puts undo stress on your back. So, good strong posture is very important to the success of your rowing. Coach Walton reminds us that by focusing on proper sequence, posture, body position at the catch and finish, as well as avoiding the 2 most common novice mistakes, you will be taking strong, confident rowing strokes in no time. Once you feel you have mastered the concepts in this video, we encourage you to browse the ever-expanding library of videos on the Rower Academy YouTube.
