SARALA BHATTARAI Almost 27 years ago, there were very few readymade food items available in the Nepali market. And pickle was one food item that was inevitable in the kitchen of the Nepali people. However, the market was occupied by India-made pickles. In this background, I had just retired from my teaching job and was free when I happened to be associated with WEAN Co-operatives. Various kinds of trainings were taking place there, and I decided to attend the training on making pickles with the thought of replacing the India-made pickles from the Nepali market. The training was organized in two levels-Basic and Advance. I completed both the levels. Of course there were many who attended the training, but very few took up the skills professionally. After completing the training, I spent two to three months wondering how to start the production, and what taste would the customers in the market like. In this regard, WEAN Co-operative took the responsibility of marketing the pickles. I was happy on the one hand, while also had a sense of fear on the other. What if the pickles I make get damaged and are returned back? Then with a strong determination, I started making pickles of new taste and flavor. I spent months exploring which spices give better taste when mixed with which fruits, and publicized my products in the society, neighbours and friends. I also asked them to taste it, and got positive feedback. I now produce Navaras pickles through the Ruby Pickle Industry. The pickle varieties that are currently popular in the market are Mixed Pickel, Hot Chilly (akabare chilly), Methi pickle, Hot Nibuwa, Methi Masala, Karela Pickle, Lapsi Pickle, Mix Methi Masala, Sweet Mix Chutney etc. The spices used in these pickles are my own recipe, and do not match with any other pickle available in the market. I am working to produce new taste varieties under new label and send to the market. There are many who like pickles of my brand but also hear people saying it is expensive while purchasing it. I would like to put the facts to the table in this regard, as all of my products are hand-made it requires more time and all the goods including the bottle, cover, spices etc. are imported hence it is a little expensive than Indian pickle. Even those produced in Nepal on a large scale may have cheaper products, but since I work on a small scale with all the work done manually, without using any machine it costs comparatively a little high. Thinking that every woman should do something for a living on her own, as an encouragement and inspiration, I have been sharing my skills in pickle making to other women who are willing to take up this profession. There are women who are eager and enthusiastic to learn more about the pickle that is popular under the Nawaras Pickle Brand. I also enjoy training them, and have held trainings in various places of Nepal including Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Banepa, Bhaktapur, Taplejung, in Kathmandu, at the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Nepal, WEAN Co-operatives etc. With the training, I have been guiding women to stand on their own. I also provide training at my own house, in groups for those who come to learn the skill. Some of the trainees have achieved success commercially, and I take pride in it. Furthermore, I have also been providing employment to people from the underprivileged community in my pickle-making cottage industry. As the saying goes, you cannot clap with a single hand, it's my family who has been my support to bringing me to where I am today. Furthermore, WEAN Co-operative was a golden entry point, where I was able to make my own identity. I learnt after coming here that no matter how difficult it is, what crisis you face, hard work and dedication will bring success to your life.
