In this video, we’ll show you how to do a bear walk! Bear walks are great for getting sensory input and practicing gross motor skills. You can add them to your child’s sensory diet, put them in an obstacle course, or just use them as a way to transition from one room to the next! Bear walks are one of the classic animal walks that offer “heavy work” opportunities. This means that bear walks activate the proprioceptive system, which has benefits to increasing children’s body awareness, regulation, and strength. To do a bear walk, put both hands and feet on the ground. Stick your bottom up in the air, and walk forwards. Try to keep your arms and legs straight, and try not to rush and fall over. Oh, and give a big bear roar! The MoveAbout channel is made by a group of paediatric occupational therapists who are passionate about having fun and promoting children’s physical and emotional development through sensory-based, play-based, and relationship-based activities. Our channel has tons of videos with great activity ideas and information for parents, caregivers, teachers, and other therapists! For other ideas on sensory diet and movement activities, check out the rest of our MoveAbout Activity Card playlist: https://bit.ly/2WAwftG To purchase the MoveAbout Activity Cards, click this link: https://rb.gy/ecqolg These videos are intended for parents, occupational therapists, educators and other health professionals to help get your child moving and regulated! They are intended to be done with adult supervision and participation in order to ensure correct alignment and form of the child. We also acknowledge that every child and environment is unique, so we would like to emphasize that these videos are not a stand alone occupational therapy program. A sensory diet is a tool that is best used with supervision from a trained occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant. If you have concerns regarding your child’s motor, cognitive, emotional and/or sensory development, please consult your child’s doctor or allied health professional.
