The first installment in the Streets of Rage series, the game casts players as one of three former city police officers who battle Mr. X's evil crime syndicate. Streets of Rage establishes many conventions of the series, such as two-player cooperative play and the use of modern electronic music from composer Yuzo Koshiro as a soundtrack. The once peaceful city has been taken over by a criminal syndicate, including factions of the police. Mass violence is now common and no one is safe. Adam Hunter (an accomplished boxer), Axel Stone (skilled martial artist) and Blaze Fielding (judo expert) are ex-police officers who have quit the force to fight back against the syndicate.
