Much of the land at the end of the estuary around Shoeburyness has been owned by the military since the 1840's and is still owned by the Ministry of Defence as an active firing range. The Broomway leads from the Wakering Stairs across Maplin Sands and is regarded as the deadliest path in Britain claiming over a hundred victims over time with many more being unrecorded.
