Florida Trail - 2023

Florida Trail 2023: A Love Letter I knew it would be different from last year’s thru-hike, how could it not be? Even the fact that it wasn’t going to be its own stand-alone hike for me, but part of something bigger. I knew I’d take the western alternates. I knew I’d point my feet northward & see the blazes turn from orange to blue, on the Blackwater Connector. I didn’t know who I’d meet. I didn’t know how I’d get there. I knew there would be new people to meet, but I didn’t know that they would become close friends. The Green Swamp stole my heart. Bradwell Bay was breathtaking (it was nice going through it in the daylight this year; (impeccably-blazed!). The big birds on the west side of Lake Okeechobee & the little towns, had me from the get go. Holding alligators & listening to indigenous tales from the next generation had me humbled. And a side quest to New Orleans for Mardi Gras?!?!?!?! I still can’t believe it, but the beads I still carry on my backpack, are a daily reminder to live a life worth living. Thank you so very much to everyone that made this leg of this adventure, so wonderful. All of you maintainers, everyone behind the scenes pulling everything together & keeping the proverbial wheels from falling off. Thank you to the hikers that came together in some hard times & supported each other in the midst of some unfortunate circumstances. The owls, the big fan palmettos, the Suwannee, yes I’ll remember you, but only after the laughter & the smiles.
