Setrock Creek Falls and South Toe River - Pisgah National Forest, NC

Hike #3 for the Black Mountains Hiking Challenge https://nchighpeaks.org/challenge This hike took place on Sunday, May 5, 2019 in the Appalachian Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, NC. A week after I finished my 2nd hike for the Black Mountains Hiking Challenge, I returned to the area to complete the four trails emanating from the Black Mountain Campground. Day and multi-day hikers were not allowed to park at the campground because a new hiker's parking lot was being built. Therefore, I parked at the South Toe River fishing access which connected to the Lower River Loop Trail. From there I hiked north/downstream, crossing the South Toe River on a relatively new pedestrian bridge and continued on the trail south towards the campground. When I reached the Black Mountain Campground I knocked out the Devil's Den Nature Trail and then began the River Loop Trail/Briar Bottom Bicycle Trail which parallels the South Toe River and Briar Bottom Camp Road. Setrock Creek Falls is a multi-level cascade 60-70 feet high on a small creek that was flowing much higher than normal due to recent rains. Disappointingly, a large tree recently fell across the base of the falls obscuring open views. **Note - after this video the tree has been removed from the waterfall.** I continued on the River Loop Trail southwest, which mostly stayed above the river in tunnels of rhododendron. The trail crosses the river on the South Toe River Road bridge, affording an excellent view upstream. Then the trail climbed the slope high above the road and river as it headed northeast back towards the campground. After passing through the campground it was a short connection back to the fishing access to finish the hike. This was a moderately easy hike that is accessible for all types of hikers. However, I was disappointed that both river loop trails did not touch the river more often.
