Natural Light Fashion Shoot On Location + Color Grading | Fashion Photography with Lindsay Adler

Successful fashion shoots begin with a concept. What are you trying to achieve in this image, and how can you reinforce the concept/story with all of the visual elements? How can you make the posing, lighting, styling, and retouching work together for the most impact? For this fashion shoot, my concept was to have an image of all golden hues. My idea was to have a nearly monochromatic image where everything was a sunset yellow/orange. The beautiful model would be standing in a pristine field of hay with beautiful golden light for a peaceful and romantic result. To reinforce this concept we begin with a gold dress and golden wig, with makeup that mimicked the golden elements in the wardrobe. Next, I decided to shoot this location later in the day for golden sunset light. This helped to create a romantic look with lighting that was already a warmer color temperature. I started by choosing a warmer white balance (cloudy) in the camera to help warm up the scene even more but knew I would push these hues even more in post-processing. The heavily backlit shot gave me the dreamy vibes I was going for, but the model’s face was a bit under-illuminated. We introduced a white reflector opposite the sun (on the right-hand side of the frame) to create a soft bounce of light on the model. This helped direct the viewer’s eye to her face without creating a result that looked heavily lit. No strobe was necessary, and instead the subtle of the white reflector (30in) was closer to my vision. I selected a Canon R5 and RF 24-70mm lens so that I could shoot at F2.8. This allowed me to shoot a slightly narrower depth of field so that the hay in front and behind the subject would be slightly out of focus. Next, time for the color grading! I brought the image into CaptureOne to adjust the hues of the shot. Please note that Lightroom has similar tools that would allow you to achieve similar results. There are three main adjustments I worked with to warm up the shot: White balance: I warmed up the Kelvin color temperature to 12,000 degrees for an extremely exaggerated warmth to the shot. Color Editor: I shifted the greens of the hay and field to yellow, then shifted all of the hues of yellow to have more of a red/orange. This instantly united all of the colors in the shot for a more monochromatic look. Color Balance: Color balance allows you to add specific colors to the shadows, mid-tones, and highlights. For this shot, I added yellow/orange to the highlights and red/magenta to the shadows. This further emphasized the warm and painterly color palette/color harmony in this fashion shoot. I had the color reinforced in the makeup, wardrobe, hair, and color grading, all resulting in a beautifully warm shot. Last, but not least, was to bring it all together with posing and composition, and create achieved several images that I adore!
