2013 Wallace Stegner Lecture: Rick Bass

Bass is the author of more than 25 books of fiction and nonfiction, including "A Thousand Deer," "Oil Notes" and "Ninemile Wolves." His fiction has received numerous awards, including the O. Henry Award, the Pushcart Prize and the Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year Award. Bass has also received fellowships for the National Endowment of the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He currently lives in Missoula, and has been touring and recording with Stellandro, an astral art-folk band. Bass grew up in the suburbs of Houston, attended school in Utah and worked for eight years as a petroleum geologist in Mississippi. In 1987, he settled in the remote Yaak Valley of Montana. In his memoir, "Why I Came West," Bass describes his love of the American West, a place both visceral and sacred. Bass continues to pursue the goal of protecting wilderness values amidst the deep-rooted philosophical conflicts that define the American West. The Stegner Lecture is sponsored by the Wallace Stegner Endowed Chair in Western American Studies at MSU. The chair continues Stegner's legacy by focusing on teaching and research in history, literature, and philosophy with a concentration on pressing Western issues. The Stegner Lecture is hosted each year by the MSU Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies. Past Stegner lecturers included Terry Tempest Williams and Jane Goodall.
