Lord Carrington KG, GCMG, CH, MC (Conservative MP and Minister 1951-82; Foreign Secretary 1979-82; Secretary General of NATO 1984-88) The Rt. Hon. Lord Boateng (born in London; childhood in Ghana; barrister at law; Labour MP and Minister 1987-2005; UK High Commissioner to South Africa (2005-2009) The aim of the conference will be to look at the legacy of empire through the eyes of high profile speakers from states that were former British dependencies and who had direct personal experience of the years of transition. They are the ones who can recall the closing years of colonial rule and can judge what its effects and consequences have been for the places and peoples there.
