INDO-EUROPEAN: TOCHARIAN B & HITTITE

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Hittite is the earliest known Indo-European language, spoken by the Hittites in Anatolia (modern Turkey) from around 1600 to 1100 BCE. It is part of the Anatolian branch of Indo-European languages and was written using a cuneiform script adapted from Akkadian. Hittite retains many archaic features, such as laryngeal consonants, that have been lost in later Indo-European languages. The language was deciphered in 1915, providing a major breakthrough in understanding Indo-European linguistics. Most texts in Hittite come from the ancient capital of Hattusa and include legal, religious, and historical documents. After the fall of the Hittite Empire, the language gradually disappeared. Tocharian is an extinct branch of the Indo-European language family that was spoken in the Tarim Basin, in present-day northwestern China, during the first millennium CE. It is known from two primary dialects, Tocharian A (also called East Tocharian or Agnean) and Tocharian B (also called West Tocharian or Kuchean). These languages were written in an adapted Brahmi script and were primarily discovered in Buddhist texts, as well as commercial documents and letters. Tocharian is linguistically significant because it exhibits features that are distinct from other Indo-European languages, providing insights into the diversity and spread of the Indo-European peoples. The language disappeared by around the 9th century, likely due to the influence of expanding Turkic and Chinese cultures in the region. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
