1. Use Fresh Bait Squid, pilchards, and silver whiting are some of the best baits for snapper. Fresh bait tends to be more attractive, especially during a hot bite. Incoming tides, particularly just before or after a tidal change, can bring an increase in activity. Brett often waits for these phases, especially around slow tides, to fish deeper waters (around 14m) in Westernport. 3. Match the Rod and Reel For night-time snapper fishing, Brett uses an 8-10kg rod paired with a 6000-size reel spooled with 30lb braid. This setup allows for a strong fight without being overly cumbersome. 4. Target Deeper Waters During Slow Tides When the tides are slow, snapper may be hanging out in deeper waters to benefit from any available water movement. In Westernport, targeting depths around 14 meters during these conditions can pay off. 5. Monitor Water Temperature Snapper bites can pick up dramatically with changes in water temperature. When Brett saw a spike to 14.5°C, he noticed one of the best snapper bites he’s experienced in August. A slight change can make a big difference. 6. Patience and Timing Snapper fishing, especially when looking for larger fish, often requires patience.
