In this video I show how I tram the Z axis travel to be perpendicular to the machine top, and then the spindle axis on an AVID CNC router. This process would apply to most CNC routers. As pointed out in the comments below, I was not very clear on one item. The method for tramming of the spindle applies for re-tramming or any other case where you already have machined the spoilboard or clamping surface to be parallel to the X and Y axis'. If you have not yet done the initial tram and machined off the top machine surface, then you should use a method where you create a parallel plane to tram against (such as a plate of glass). A good example of this method is • Tramming a CNC Router Spindle Also, the dual dial indicator tramming tools are ok (the one I showed is reasonably priced). However, single indicator with a beam mounted to a pin chucked in the collet is just as accurate and cheaper (just buy a single dial indicator and a short precision rod for the collet and make a beam out of wood). It is slightly less convenient because you have to rotate it 180 degrees to get both readings.
