Fighter jets were seen taking off and landing at Taiwan’s Hsinchu Airbase on Monday as China began new war games around the island. China stated the drills were a warning to the "separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces". China’s military did not specify an end date for the exercises, prompting condemnation from Taiwan's government. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, had been bracing for more drills since President Lai Ching-te's National Day speech, which Beijing criticised. Lai asserted that China had no right to represent Taiwan but expressed willingness to cooperate. China's Eastern Theatre Command confirmed the "Joint Sword-2024B" drills were underway in the Taiwan Strait and regions around Taiwan.
