So you want to be a pediatric intensivist. You love children and want to help take care of some of the sickest patients in the hospital. Let’s debunk the public perception myths and give it to you straight. This is the reality of pediatric critical care. Pediatric critical care is the specialty of medicine focused on the treatment of seriously ill children from birth to 18 years old and beyond. Much like pediatricians, pediatric intensivists are the masters of physiology and pharmacology. They use the wide breadth of knowledge from medical school and residency and apply it at the bedside on a daily basis. To become a pediatric intensivist, you must complete 4 years of medical school, followed by 3 years of pediatric residency, and 3 years of pediatric critical care fellowship.
