My Friend The Photographer - David Rams- From Preachers to Playboy Short Documentary by Kael Vox Vox the Visitor Productions It’s been over a year since I completed this film. We started in February 2023 and I finalized it by June 2023. Finally releasing it publicly after waiting on festival decisions. I’m so proud to announce: A finalist in the New York Cinematography Awards. And won multiple categories in The Top Indie Awards in Tokyo- for Best Documentary Short, Best Cinematography, and Best Message. It was also nominated for Best Director, Best Music, and Best Editing.* To get outside recognition for this project was super special- as it marked and solidified my venture into filmmaking and it was a very special subject- An incredible artist who has lived a very full life and inspired so many, including myself. You wouldn’t believe all the incredible work we found; so this is to show you a little and celebrate the man behind the lens. Someone who wasn’t afraid to live the life of an artist and his work shows that in every click. I know this man is one of the reasons I shoot the way I shoot today. I hope you enjoy: My debut film- about my dear friend, photographer, and mentor David Rams. David came from very humble beginnings, and worked his way up to being an in house photographer for Playboy and a Celebrity photographer. He has been published hundreds of times and his resume is needless to say- impressive. He got diagnosed with cancer a few years ago which has taken a toll on his energy levels- but he is being treated and is still one of the leading photographers in Atlanta. He decided to start going through his boxes of old archived film work to possibly put together a show. He has been shooting longer than I have been on this earth and his catalog of work is incredibly inspiring. I felt this was something that really needed to be documented - and so I asked him if it would be ok if I did a little short documentary on the process- luckily agreed to let me follow him around for a few days. He’s been my mentor for as long as I've known him- and inspired me to get back to my own passion of photography and creating. To do this film, especially as my first official cinematic project, was such a joy and honor to capture. I learned a lot shooting and working on this film- as I was learning a brand new camera and learning the professional editing software all as I went along. So it’s a little rough and the sound is… well it’s a beginners documentary. But my whole approach to everything I ever shoot is that I always shoot "what it feels like"... and on that front, I am very pleased and proud of what I've created. It was so special that this is the first film I made. I made the film so that it has 5 different "acts" sort of like a play- which should be apparent upon viewing. Please enjoy this project that we put literal tears into. Showcasing a man that is a mentor to many, and a true talent to the world of art and feeling. This film is a labor of love that has lit a flame of inspiration in me for the future of what could be; and I'm proud to present it to you all. I appreciate your time and viewing.
