This episode of 2kB of Fun is a geeky one. I found a cheap M1 EX upgrade board on a classifieds site. It only came with a program ROM card. In this video I take you along my quest to get it installed and working. I found out it wasn't just a matter of screwing it in. You need to modify the main PCM in certain places, and replace the ROM's with new ones. My M1, with an above 300000 serial, is one of the last batches, and this batch omits socketed Eproms. So that means you have to desolder 2 large chips. In the intro I play some notes on the M1 using the M1EX program called "The Deep". This is a very challenging patch for the synth, as it is a combination made up of 5 sounds. It means the polyphony is challenged quite a bit, and you'll see the M1 struggling to arrange the 16 channels to the most audible parts. The end of the video contains a snippet from the demo song on the Orchestra card set I use for testing the PCM slot. The M1 becomes a bit like the Korg T3 with this upgrade.
