This is a brief video summary of the processes I used to build my family’s dining table. Design: This design is a synthesis of modern, industrial, and minimalist styles. Materials and finishes were chosen to reflect similar items in our home. Top: The design features a top made from two-inch thick American Black Walnut lumber finished with Osmo Polyx 3054 (satin) hardwax oil. Legs: The table legs are fabricated from 3/8 x 3.5 inch hot rolled steel flat bar that was blued, sealed, and lacquered to a satin finish. Holes for mounting to the top were drilled and slotted to handle seasonal wood expansion. Assembly: A full-width tenon was cut on either end of the walnut top to fit into steel “mortises” created by the upper section of the legs - simulating the effect of traditional “breadboard” ends. The tenon shoulder depth is slightly shallower than the steel thickness to provide a narrow reveal of the leg tops and sides. Legs are connected to the top utilizing threaded inserts and 1/4”-20 low-head furniture bolts.
