Making CHEAP Tomato Paste Wash at 10.8% ABV and only 28p per litre to run through an Air Still Pro!    • Making CHEAP Tomato Paste Wash at 10....   . Hey folks! I thought I'd have another go at distilling, thanks to those lovely people at www.brewathome.shop who have leant me an Air Still Pro, to see what I think of it and how it compares to the traditional Air Still. In order to prepare for the distillation, I have had to make a tomato paste wash, so this film is about going through the process of making a very cheap tomato paste wash in preparation for distilling. The ingredients for the wash are as follows: 4 kg of sugar (£4.28), 1 tube of tomato pureé (60p), 1 pack of Still Spirits Turbo Yeast (free - it came with my Air Still), and approximately 17 litres of ordinary tap water (free). The recipe for this brew is as follows: 1. Fill a large saucepan with hot water (approx 10-12 litres). 2. Put the pan onto some heat so it comes to a simmer. 3. As the water is heating add the sugar and stir as you add it. 4. Squeeze the tomato pureé into the pan and stir it all together. 5. Keep the heat on the pan until all of the sugar has completely dissolved, then remove the heat. 6. Leave to cool for around 3 hours. 7. Add 5 litres of cold water into a fermentation bucket. 8. Pour the tomato sugar water into the fermentation bucket on top of the cold water. 9. Add the yeast, and after adding the yeast, in this case I added carbon, which came with the yeast, I wouldn't normally use carbon, but it came with the yeast, so I followed the instructions. 10. Leave to fully ferment, then rack into demijohns and place somewhere cool so that it clears a little before going into the distiller. 11. Once cleared the tomato paste was he is ready to be distilled. My key reflection of this process is that it is indeed very easy to make cheap tomato paste wash, this worked out at 28p per litre and it made tomato paste at 10.8% ABV. My other reflection is that the Still Spirits Turbo Yeast isn't very good, it took a long time to ferment and was certainly no faster than Lalvin EC-1118, I also think that for absolute cheapness that bread yeast would likely work just as well. Anyway, if you're interested in what happens to this tomato paste wash in terms of distillation, keep an eye on my YouTube channel as I'll be running it through both an Air Still and an Air Still Pro in order to compare the results and also review the Air Still Pro. Once again thanks to www.brewathome.shop for loaning me the Air Still Pro, it's really appreciated, cheers!
