After returning from a short internship in Canada, he decided that he wanted to found a graphene startup. He eventually called this graphene startup Log 9 Materials. Graphene in India wasn't common at the time, and still isn't today. To date, the world has only caught a glimpse of graphene products outside of the lab, like the rumored upcoming Samsung graphene battery phone, as well as the Real Graphene power bank. The allure of a graphene battery is that, because of how conductive graphene is as a material, a graphene battery will be able to charge much more quickly than normal batteries. This explains the popularity of products like the Real Graphene power bank and the Samsung graphene battery phone. Thanks to the support of IIT Roorkee and the parents of Akshay Singhal, Log 9 Materials was able to launch its first product, PPuF, India's first graphene product which is a plug-on graphene filter for cigarettes. This simple product would prove to be a stepping stone for Log 9 Materials on their way to creating the first graphene battery in India. After launching PPuF, Akshay Singhal and his team came up with more than a dozen different applications for graphene, but settled on two specific ones: cleaning up oil spills, and enhancing aluminium fuel cells. They were able to raise another round from eight people worth $500,000 in order to finance these pursuits. Following this, the Log 9 Materials team spent two months building an extremely impressive graphene-enhanced aluminium fuel cell which was capable of powering a car. Akshay believes that the graphene battery Log 9 Materials was able to produce in this period of the startup's journey increased its valuation of $50 million. Sadly, investors thought that the technology Log 9 Materials had developed was too good to be true. That being said, in 2019 and 2020 we have seen a rise in popularity of the graphene battery in products like Real Graphene power bank and the Samsung graphene battery phone. Sequoia Capital India's Surge program, as well as Exfinity Venture Partners, both saw the potential that the graphene battery had, and decided to invest $3.5 million into Log 9 Materials. One of the reasons that Sequoia Capital India and Exfinity Venture Partners decided to invest so much money in Log 9 Materials is that the graphene technology they are trying to bring to the market is incredible. Their aluminium fuel cell uses aluminium, water, and oxygen to create aluminium hydroxide, which is converted into energy. Graphene membrane is used to keep carbon dioxide out of the aluminium fuel cell during this process. This energy is green, clean, and inexpensive, unlike fossil fuels and hydrogen fuel. Not only that, but India has huge stockpiles of aluminium, and so if it is adopted by the world as a fuel source, India would become an exporter of this fuel. #ग्राफीन #Backstage with Millionaires #BwM
