🧩This is the 1st of two videos on this House. Check out the other video on my playlist.🧩 The Aiken-Rhett House in Charleston, SC is a rare time capsule, preserved rather than restored. Built in 1820, it still has its original paint, fixtures, and furnishings, giving visitors an authentic feel of how the house aged over time. Instead of polishing it up, they’ve kept it as it was, letting the history speak for itself. If I’m recalling correctly, this is the first time I’ve visited a preserved historic site (the house mansions I’ve toured to date have been restored to their former glory, as close as possible — like the Nathaniel Russell House which I will post about at a later time). The experience helped me picture more clearly how people actually lived during that time. Very enlightening. The Aiken-Rhett House staff not only allows photography, they even encourage it (with reasonable limits). I took the self-guided tour and had the rooms to myself for the most part, which is rare and also quite nice — it meant I didn’t have to rush my shots! I tried to keep the sounds of the creaking floors and the blasting fans in the video to keep it as close to real as possible. Enjoy.
