Himeji castle: the most beautiful and best preserved feudal castle | Japan | 4K 60fps | nomadraul

Himeji Castle (姫路城, Himejijō), also known as White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo) due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country's twelve original castles. 00:00 Himeji castle entrance 00:49 Hishi-no-mon gate Hishi-no-mon is the symbolic gate of the front of the castle and its luxuriousness is sure to stand out. The name of the gate comes from the two hishi (diamonds) that are lined up in the crown that goes over the gate. The windows are decorated with various designs. 01:32 Hyakken-roka Hyakken-roka (long connecting corridor) still exists in the remains of the Nishi-no-maru Bailey. The Hyakken-roka was a defense mechanism built to protect Himeji Castle’s less protected west side. 02:55 Access to the keep 03:15 The keep: basement The basement floor of the keep, is slightly dark because of the surrounding stone wall. In the central area, there are 6 separate rooms. 2 of the rooms are built as warehouses. As preparation for sieges, there are 3 hidden vases used as toilets at the northeast and southwest corners and there is something like a kitchen sink at the northwest corner. 03:43 The keep: East and west giant pillars (3rd floor) From the 3rd floor, there are two giant pillars on the west and east sides. The giant spruce pillar on the east was original just 1 pillar at the time of construction. The west pillar was switched to Japanese cypress in the Showa Era Restoration. The flooring of the third floor was spliced into two pillars. The Showa Era Restoration began in 1956. Due to the dismantling and repair, it became apparent that the giant pillar on the west side was rotten and needed to be changed. The choice to use one piece of Japanese cypress, which has great durability, was made. 04:14 The keep: 6th floor The height of the keep is 91.9 meters above sea level. From the ground it is 46.3 meters high. The 6th floor is the highest floor of the castle but the style is different from the floors below. The central room is one step higher than the surrounding corridors and is made in a traditional style of Japanese architecture. It became clear the originally all of the walls were meant to have windows in them during the Heisei Era Restoration. The protective deity of the castle is enshrined at Osakabe-jinja Shrine. Originally the jinushigami (local area deity), the deity was enshrined on a low hill area between the To-no-mon gate 2 and To-no-mon gate 3. In recent years, the deity has been moved to the inside of the keep. 05:12 The legend of Sen-Hime Princess Sen was the granddaughter of Ieyasu Tokugawa and was married to Toyotomi Hideyori when she was 7. After escaping before Osaka was overtaken in the Summer Siege of Osaka, she got married, for the second time, to Tadatoki Honda when she was 20. Princess Sen gave birth to Katsu, her eldest daughter, in the year after she was married. The next year she gave birth to her first son, Kochiyo, but he died when he was just 3 years old. For that reason, Princess Sen decided to build a shrine on Otokoyama, northwest of the castle, and it is said that she prayed from the window of the Yo-no-yagura Tower to the Tenmangu shrine every day. Only a few years later, her husband, then her mother, also died. The princess then returned to Edo where she became a Buddhist nun and took the name Tenjuin, following the tradition of widows at the time. This is where she spent the rest of her life until she died in 1666. more info: https://www.japan-experience.com/disc... 05:52 Himeji castle at night Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today was completed in 1609. It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths. 07:45 Recommendations more info: https://www.himejicastle.jp/en/map/ma... // https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3501.html #himeji #himejicastle #himejijo #himejima #japan #japantravel #japantrip #4k60fps #nomadraul ------------------------------------------------ Music:    • Autumn In Japan - Japanese Zen Music ...   ------------------------------------------------ More content on: INSTAGRAM:   / nomadraul
