South Sister Summit Hike - Central Oregon

This video describes the South Sister Climber Trail #36 the way we found it on 9-28-2016. The trail starts at the Devils Lake trail head on Cascades Lakes Hwy, at an elevation of a little over 5400 feet. The summit lies at 10,358 feet resulting in approximately 4,900 feet of elevation gain. It's a 12 mile long out and back hike that I would rate as difficult, due to length and steepness, plus many places on the trail consist of loose material. It took us 8½ hours to complete, at a moderate pace with minimal breaks. I would recommend bringing trekking poles, an extra layer or two of clothing , sunglasses to prevent snow blindness, gaiters to prevent rocks from getting in your shoes, sunscreen, 3 quarts of water and a few food items. I would also recommend getting an early start in the day. The hike is very scenic and on a clear day you can see clearly to Mt. Hood and sometimes Mt. Adams. There are also great views of Middle and North Sisters as well as Broken Top Mtn. We saw many people on this trail who were ill prepared, in my opinion, some without even a backpack and only carrying a water bottle in their hand, and several of them were not able to complete the hike.
