Helping Our Kids to Self-Advocate with Marcia Eckerd, Ph.D. and Rob Bernstein, M.A.

This talk will explore self-advocacy as it pertains to autistic children at all levels. The idea inherent in self-advocacy is to play a role in determining one's life. But research shows that autistic children aren't coming out of school believing in themselves as self advocates. Can we agree on having self-advocacy goals that actually incorporate the needs of these children? We need to help these children be self aware and express themselves effectively. Even more, we need schools - and people more generally -attending to and responsive to what these children are saying they need. What do autistic children ask for, if they can? What do we need to do to help them learn self-advocacy? What shifts need to take place for children to feel that self-advocacy actually works for them? Marcia Eckerd, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in practice for over 30 years.
