Just at the northern end of Bang Tao Beach is an approximately 600-meter-long beach named Layan Beach Phuket. Layan Beach is a favorite of local Thais and expats who tend to return on weekends when they have some time to relax. This is a small and picturesque beach featuring a little island just offshore and within walking distance, or swimming distance if you visit during high tide. The island is called Koh Kala, and there is a reef on the north side of the island where snorkeling is excellent. The rocky shore of Layan Beach’s north end is also quite good for seeing a variety of tropical fish and other sealife. Layan Beach seems to be a private beach for the exclusive resort, Layan Anantara Phuket Resort, but the beach is public, and you’re free to go there and swim or walk around. There are usually only a few people from the Layan Anantara walking around the beach area. Layan Beach has a very natural setting with many tall coconut palm trees and other casuarina trees for shade along the beach. If you’re not snorkeling, you can swim or wade in the waters just off the beach. The water is calm and protected from some storms. There are some submerged rocks and coral, but on a clear day you can see where you’re stepping and should be fine. At night, you’re probably thinking you should head elsewhere for some nightlife, but Layan Beach has an exceptional club called Dream Beach Club. This club is a locals’ favorite and gets consistently high ratings on social media. They feature great food and cocktails and a mix of electronic-style music. Seating is on the beach, and once the kids go to sleep, it’s a really nice atmosphere.
