A Life of Honor: A Gay Veteran Recalls Serving in Silence

When Joseph Patton joined the Navy in 1955, he recalls serving in silence, as the LGBTQIA+ community could not be open while in the military. Despite being the “perfect sailor,” Joseph was kicked out of the Navy for being friends with gay service members, under the assumption that he was homosexual. Due to the status of his “undesirable discharge,” Joseph was unable to receive any benefits for his service in the Navy. Years later, Joseph came to StoryCorps to reflect on his journey and share his resilience, as he fought and successfully changed his status to “honorable discharge.” Directed by Richard O’Connor Executive Producers Dave Isay Rachel Hartman Producer Savannah Winchester Senior Audio Producer Jasmyn Morris Audio Produced by Jud Esty-Kendall Supervising Sound Recordist Jasmyn Morris Audio Mixed By Jarrett Floyd Animation by Ace & Son Moving Picture Co., LLC Design Taisiya Zaretskaya Art Production Natalie Greene Shannon Baney Taisiya Zaretskaya Original Music Joshua Abrams Music Performed by Joshua Abrams Hamid Drake Marquis Hill Emmett Kelly Adam Thornburg Music Mixed by Joshua Abrams Neil Strauch Outro Music by “Elegiac” by Bryan Copeland Special Thanks Joseph Patton In Partnership with American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress NPR POV Funding Provided by Corporation for Public Broadcasting A private corporation funded by the American people.
