Paint Along Wildflower Meadow - Plus, How to Make a Pastel Journal

In this video tutorial I will teach you my methods on how to make a Pastel Travel Journal, plus a real time paint along lesson in the journal notebook. Let's face it, pastels can be a messy medium, which makes it a bit challenging for traveling and painting on the go. Over the years, I have come up with my own methods to create a pastel travel journal. In this lesson, you will learn some of my techniques and I will share products that will help you to create your own pastel travel journal. Helpful Products for Creating a Pastel Travel Journal: I like to use notebooks that have a spiral binding because it makes the pages easy to turn and I can lay the notebook flat or turn to a page and put the whole notebook on a small to-go easel. I really like to use watercolor pads as I can create a watercolor underpainting, coat with Clear Gesso (as you will see in this video) and then add pastel on top. Here is a video lesson that shows this technique:    • A New Idea!  Using Watercolor Paper f...   In this lesson, you will see me using a pad of Canson XL Sand Grain paper. It is not really "sanded" like many sanded pastel papers, but has a texture to the paper like sand. I sometimes work in these notebooks with just pastel, but will often create multiple pages with my DIY method of making my own sanded surface...(also shown in the video). While traveling I almost always take my bamboo stand from IKEA with is so versatile. I cut a piece of foamcore board to be my backing board. I will sometimes take my Heilman Box (a pastel box that keeps your pastels safe and secure), but often I will just take various sets of pastels (as you will see in the video) and I secure the lids with artist's tape. After I complete a painting, I protect the piece from smudging by taping a piece of tracing paper over it. I will often tape the notebook closed or put a large rubber band around it to keep the pages from moving, and thus keeping the paintings safe. I have used notebooks with this method for years, and the paintings still look like the day they were created.
