Mapun, officially the Municipality of Mapun, is a 4th class municipality in the province of Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 26,597 people. It is formerly known as Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi until 1988 and prior to that as Cagayan de Sulu until 1984. Mapun is an island municipality in the Sulu Sea on the south-western extreme of the Philippines, located very close to Sabah, Malaysia. The people inhabiting the island are known as Jama Mapun or "people of Mapun". Their dialect is Pullun Mapun, which means "Mapun language". The Jama Mapun (Bajau, Cagayano, Orang Cagayan, Sama Cagayan, Tao Cagayan, Sama) are a Sama-speaking people widely distributed in the area about north Borneo and southwestern Philippines.
