Nestled within the undergrowth of Whitlingham woods lies a medieval church abandoned for nearly 400 years. Dating back from Saxo-Norman times this once grand church perched on a hill towered into the Norwich skyline keeping watch on the rolling countryside surrounding it.The original tower was of Saxo-Norman origin so possibly dating back as far as the 11th century with the nave and chancel being added in the 14th and 15th century. When Henry VIII broke from the catholic church in 1533 the English reformation had begun and this church along with many others across the country were used far less frequently. By the mid 1600s the church was abandoned and allowed to ruin. For the following 300 years since it stood relatively unscathed until in 1940 the tower fell. The east wall of the chancel was then demolished in 1997 on health and safety grounds. Local folklore tells of four stone figures who once were located around the tower of the church. It is said they would animate (come alive) at midnight and move around and shake each other’s hands. Reputedly only visible to unmarried people. Whether the remnants of these sculptures still lurk beneath the surrounding undergrowth of the ruin is unclear.
