Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Avignon Les Halles

Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Avignon Les Halles The Halles d'Avignon are a gigantic Provencal market , meeting place for more than a century of the inhabitants of the historic center of Avignon . Their fame has been consecrated by such authors as Peter Mayle or Jean Viard . In addition their north facade, on 600 m 2 is covered with a green wall designed by Patrick Blanc , its originality makes it one of the poles of attraction of the city of the popes. In 1562 , the name Parpaille was put to death as a heretic and his house, located in downtown Avignon, shaved. On this land was planned to build a covered market and wooden barracks to house the pack animals bringing supplies to the market. This site was then called up Pie, named Pius V , the reigning Pope in Rome. This first building was slow to build since on a map of the city of Avignon, in 1618 , appears the colonnade of this hall under construction. This one was finished in 1624 , it included, besides the shops, a body of guard and a chapel. The rue du Vieux-Sextier was opened between 1749 and 1754 by Jean-Baptiste Franque . The idea of the architect Avignonnais was to constitute in this new artery, overlooking the Place Pie, a large city supply center with butcher, fish shop and triperie. In n o 22, the front of the butchery has only survived with its ornamentation of cattle heads and Ovidae. The other two stores, which stood opposite this one, disappeared after having remained in use until the opening of the current Halles. Between 1760 and 1764 , on the plans of Jean-Baptiste Franque , his son undertook the construction of a new hall which was demolished under the Second Empire . A painting by Pierre Grivolas , painted in 1868 and exhibited at the Calvet Museum , shows the open-air market that was being held on Place Pie. The 40 merchants of Les Halles offer bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables, poultry, pastries, delicatessen, olives, shellfish, flowers, organic and exotic products. Whether they are butchers, delicatessens, fishmongers, creamer, caterer or wine merchant, their stands is the rendezvous of the inhabitants of Avignon who meet there during the week of Tuesday to Sunday. This achievement was wanted by the city of Avignon as part of its project to rehabilitate the vile center and entrusted to the botanist Patrick Blanc . In 2005 , he designed a 30 meters by 11.50 meters high plant wall on the north façade of les Halles. It is a composition that assembles twenty plants per square meter and which is enhanced with multicolored flowers. The designer explains "On a load-bearing wall or a supporting structure is placed a metal frame that supports a 10 mm expanded PVC sheet. thickness, on which are stapled two layers of polyamide felt 3 mm thick each. These layers of felt melt somehow mosseswhich develop on the rocky walls and which support the roots of many plants. A network of pipes controlled by solenoid valves provides a nutritive solution containing the dissolved mineral elements necessary for the growth of plants. The felt is impregnated by capillarity of this nutritive solution, which descends along the wall by gravity. The roots of plants take the nutrients they need, and the excess water is collected down the wall by a gutter, before being reinjected into the network of pipes: the system works in a closed circuit. Plants are selected for their ability to grow on this medium and depending on the available light " ( Avignon - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Avignon .
