Liveness: The beginning of performance | Marianne Kim | TEDxASUWest

“As long as we have been around, humans have been compelled to create and experience live performance.” In this captivating talk, Marianne Kim takes us on a journey through time as she discusses the significance of live performance, sharing an excerpt of her own transdisciplinary work, “The Mis(Diagnosis) of Madam Toy,” what Dr. Kim describes as a piece that “reflects on the racist pseudoscience of the nineteenth century and the treatment of Chinese women immigrating to the United States during the same time,” performed by Michael Arbizo, Olivia Hsu, My-Linh Le and Erin Kong. Marianne Kim is an Associate Professor in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Performance Program in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies. She is a Korean American artist working in screendance, multimedia installation, choreography, and performance art. Her areas of research include the disorienting effects of technologized labor, cultural identity, consumerism, and most recently the forces within industrial food production and promotion that mediate race, gender, and bodies. Her most recent presentations include Athens Video Dance Project, Dance Film Association/Film Society of Lincoln Center, Wexner Center for the Arts, International Screendance Festival at ADF, MIVSC São Carlos Videodance Festival, Ciné-Corps Festival de Films Sur La Danse in France, and the Poznan Biennial in Poland. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
