Karytaina is a village of Gortynia in the prefecture of Arcadia. It is built on top of a hill around the homonymous medieval castle. It is located on the site of ancient Brentis. The settlement is particularly notable for its medieval character given to it by the houses, the castle and the Byzantine-style churches. It has been recognized as a traditional settlement. Near the historical settlement of Karytaina are two bridges that join the slopes between which the river Alfeios flows, near its confluence with the river Lousios. They are part of the route that connects Andritsaina with Stemnitsa, through the historic town of the same name.The older of the two is stone and dates back to the Byzantine Middle Ages, with reconstructions in 1441 and after the civil war. The newest reinforced concrete arched bridge, which is the subject of this study, was built in the late 1950s next to the stone bridge.
