Uterine infections can be infection to the uterus or cervix. Infection to the uterus is known and endometritis, which is an inflammation or irritation of the inner lining of the uterus. The various causes can be due to infection from chlamydia, gonorrhea, tuberculosis. Vaginal bacterial enter into the uterus. This usually happens after child birth, after caesarian section, miscarriage or one procedures are done like hysteroscopy or putting in an intrauterine contraceptive device. Therefore prevention by taking antibiotics before and after the procedure is needed. If there is endometritis, how does the woman present? Endometritis presents with fever, lower abdominal pain, excess vaginal discharge which can be smelling or excessive bleeding during periods. Diagnosis is done by history taking and physical examination. Per speculum showing the discharge coming out of the cervix. Pelvic examination may show pain in and around the uterus. certain tests can be asked like blood tests showing CBC and ESR. the pus or the discharge can be sent for smear and for culture sensitivity. Additional tests like ultrasound can be asked for . If this infection is untreated, it can lead to complications like intrauterine adhesion. Infertility, pus collection in the uterus called as pyometria, septicemia, and septic shock. Coming to the infections of the cervix, is cervicitis, that is inflammation of the cervix, which is the lower end of the mouth of the uterus. Next is pelvic inflammatory disease, which is the infection or inflammation of the uterus tubes or the adnexia. Antibiotics are given to treat the woman and her partner. There is increased risk of ectopic pregnancy in PID due to tubal adhesion and scarring. Due to PID, there is pain during intercourse, to prevent this uterus infections and cervical infections, follow safe sex practices, such as use of condom, avoid multiple sexual partners. Treat yourself and the partner as well.
