There are some routes that would lead you through parts of the reserve. 1. if you drive from Arequipa to Colca Canyon you will drive along the west side of the reserve which is very beautiful itself! 2. you drive completely through the reserve kind of a highway when you drive from Arquipa to Puno. It's beautiful as well but there's lots of traffic with trucks, so it's a bit stressful to drive (also beware if you're not accustomed to the height yet. The passage through the reserve is on 4500m height permanently!) 3. if you're coming back from Cusco or Puno you can take a turn in Imata and drive almost completely alone along the east side of the reserve. First you drive through a long field of desert sand before you reach rocky areas with alpakas along the way. We finally took it to a salt lake in the south west of the reserve and took the 34C back to Arequipa where you also see the vulcano El Misti along the way. I so badly wanted to take drone shots of the salt lake but the wind was so strong there that it was impossible to fly. Also I took more photos during the day than filmed that's why we added some photos in end to get a better idea of what to see in this reserve. Oh, and if you see footage of people driving a car through the salt lake: That's forbidden now and I wouldn't recommend it. There are signs all over the place and people are mining salt there, so you would probably destroy areas that could otherwise be harvested. So please be a considerate and mindful tourist when traveling to Peru :) --------------------- gear we use for our trips filming: Drone DJI Mavic Air* https://amzn.to/3hRMw71 Gopro Hero 7* https://amzn.to/2MDhbcL Gpro Hero 8 and super happy* https://amzn.to/2L5gus7 Canon 5D Mark III / Mark IV newer cam* https://amzn.to/3s4r17V Canon EF 24-105 f4 for everyday pics* https://amzn.to/35azFro Canon 70-200 f4 for animal pics and cute alpaca photos* https://amzn.to/3bcn9eH Sigma Art 35mm f1,4 for Canon for nightsky pics on this trip* https://amzn.to/3hMDhot Tripod for night shots* https://amzn.to/3ohDtyH save your stuff along the way tiny ssd drive (I carry 2 on vacations): https://amzn.to/397sDVo (contains affiliate links, marked with *, if you choose to buy something we recommend, we get a tiny provision, that helps us run our blog.
