For these reasons the Spoil Canal has been avoided like a plague, with anglers opting for the deeper and wider Mississippi River Gulf Outlet canal, or MRGO. But, the MRGO was closed in 2009, sending increased boat traffic to the winds and turns of the Spoil Canal.
