He famously stripped off his clothes in front of his father and the bishop of Assisi, giving up his inheritance and choosing to live in poverty. Foundation of the Franciscan Order: Initially, Francis lived as a hermit, but he soon attracted followers who were inspired by his teachings of simplicity, love, and humility.
