26 January 2020 at MUSEUM MMK Markus Gabriel Fiction, Imagination, and Social Facts—The Dialectical Glue of Society In my talk I will argue that social facts do not lie in the eye of the beholder. On the contrary, they shape the eye of the beholder, because the social only exists when several individuals disagree with one another. This dissent comes about through sexual reproduction and the production conditions of the human form of life—in other words, it is in part biological. The non-biological, historical aspect of the social arises from the necessity of imagining scenes of life in a fictional context. It is in reciprocal irritation over this dissent that we explain the actions of others. In the process, we develop stereotypes and rational ideal types that essentially, however, never correspond entirely to reality. The result is a dialectic resolved by constitutional methods in the form of institutions that promise consensus on neutral ground—albeit without the possibility of that promise ever being fulfilled in the utopia of a unanimous community. The social is thus always in a state of flux; there is no such thing as ontic normality. This circumstance itself is the origin and the preservation of normativity—the dialectical glue of society.
