Padraig Jack - It Could Be Home

Official music video for It Could Be Home by Padraig Jack. Seeking not to provoke people but provoke thought 'It Could Be Home' is a song written by an Irish Gaeilgeoir from Iar Chonnacht attempting to walk a mile in an Ulster Unionists shoes, while conscious that ‘Ulster Unionist’ can include a disparate grouping of people with differing views. In the context of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and surrounding conversations about a now possible poll on a United Ireland, many sides are now surveying the landscape asking what that might look like. After spending '400 years setting down their roots and lacing up their marching boots', there is a green ‘Ivy growing at the feet’ of union loyalists as conditions have come to be that they are becoming a numerical minority again within the geographical and political buffer that the creation of Northern Ireland provided 100 years ago and perhaps a fear and insecurity exists ‘Despite the zeal with which my standard flies ahigh’. At the same time it also seems that Unionists love for their union is perhaps not reciprocated. ‘Im not welcome here, Im not wanted there’ – Does there exist a feeling among some of the descendants of Ulster planters that they are like an isolated garrison; becoming outnumbered in this ‘House of Rome’ and cut off and isolated from their original homeland. ‘I’ve got this feeling Ive been jilted by my sovereign, it would be treason if they cast us out alone’. This song attempts to understand some of the considerations that might exist within the psyche of some Unionists and ponders how they might view being a part of the whole island of Ireland ('I've been looking at all of this place, like it could be home'). In a sense asking a question of them - Is it time to think the unthinkable? What if all of Ireland might be my home? Equally this song seeks to invoke some compassionate reflection on the part of Irish nationalists of what might be going through the mind of these Unionists and to think for a moment how it must feel to be in the position they’re in.
