Chrysler ( Plymouth ) Valiant R and S Series Western Australia

Australian Chrysler valiant RV1 R Series The RV1 r Series is an automobile which was produced in Australia from January 1962 to March 1962 by Chrysler Australia. It was the first Australian Chrysler Valiant model. The Valiant RV1 or R Series was launched in Australia in January 1962. Completely knocked down packs were imported from Windsor in Canada, bodies were painted at Chrysler Australia's Mile End facility and final assembly was undertaken at Tonsley Park. The Australian model comprised a combination of US Valiant V100 base model and V200 deluxe model components. It can easily be identified by the boot lid which included a non-functional spare wheel molding and oblong tail-lights. The R series was offered only in 4 door sedan form. It was marketed by Chrysler Australia as the "Valiant by Chrysler" rather than as the Chrysler Valiant. Engines and transmissions The R series was offered only with a 225-cubic-inch (3.7 L) capacity inline-six engine, with a choice of three-speed manual transmission or optional three-speed TorqueFlight automatic transmission. Production and replacement Only 1,008 R series were produced by Chrysler Australia prior to its replacement by the Chrysler Valiant (SV1) S series in March 1962. 672 of these were manual sedans and 336 were automatic sedans. SV1 S Series The SV1 Valiant or S Series was introduced in March 1962, replacing the Chrysler Valiant (RV1) R Series only ten weeks after the release of its predecessor. Like the R series it was essentially a US design just assembled in Australia. It was an evolution of the previous model, featuring a revised radiator grille treatment with the name "Valiant" at the top. The boot lid no longer included a non-functional spare wheel molding and round tail-lights replaced the previous oblong units. Mechanical changes included larger brakes, increased fuel tank capacity and a corrosion-resistant exhaust muffler. A steering-column mounted gearshift replaced the floor-mounted shifter, however cars fitted with the automatic transmission option retained push-putton controls. It was only offered only in 4 door sedan form. Like its predecessor and was also marketed as Valiant by Chrysler rather than as Chrysler Valiant. Engines and transmissions The S series Valiant was offered only with the, 225-cubic-inch (3.7 L) capacity inline, Slant-6 engine with a choice of three-speed manual transmission or three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Production and replacement Only 10,009 S series Valiants were built prior to its replacement by its predecessor in May 1963. 4,513 of these were manual sedans and 5,496 were automatic sedans.
