5/10/22 Geology of Lake Superior's North Shore

The geology of the north shore of Lake Superior consists primarily of volcanic rocks that erupted over a relatively (geologically) short period of time approximately 1.1 billion years ago. This activity was part of what we call the Mid-continent Rift which extends in a large, arc-shaped break nearly 2000 km from Kansas to lower Michigan. Some of the best exposures of these rocks are visible along the rugged north shore. The presentation will include a description of the geologic history and the types of rocks, minerals, and landscapes one encounters when exploring this region. Bio: Jeff Thole is the Geology Laboratory Supervisor at Macalester College. He arrived at Macalester in 1996 after doing 5 years of environmental consulting. His work experience also includes spending a year as a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. His primary duties include teaching introductory geology labs and maintaining, running, and user instruction for the instrumentation housed in the Macalester Science Division’s Keck Laboratory. Jeff received Master of Science in Geology from Washington State University in 1991 and Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1987.
