Straight and Curvy Trains at Walpole Union Station. Loud Horns!!

Walpole Union Station is located at a major railroad junction, where the ex-New Haven Midland Division (today's MBTA Franklin Line) and the ex-Old Colony Mansfield & Framingham (today's CSX Framingham Secondary) intersect. The historic station depot has been partially restored, mostly on the outside, with vacant space on the inside. There is a ground-level diamond crossing at the site, as well as a full and complete wye surrounding the junction and adjacent yards, which serve both freight traffic and as storage space for some maintenance of way and construction equipment/materials. Passenger train service is provided by MBTA Commuter Rail trains operating between Boston and Franklin generally every 2 hours (more frequently in the peak direction only during rush hours). Additional MBTA trains operate between Boston and a park-and-ride facility adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, which is located on the Framingham Secondary. These trains diverge off the Franklin Line here at Walpole by using the northeast leg of the wye to switch onto the Secondary. The platform layout of Walpole, however, has made the Foxboro service controversial; trains going to and from Foxboro pass right through the parking lot of Walpole as they navigate a fairly sharp curve through the wye, but because there is only a platform on the main track through the junction, Foxboro trains cannot stop at Walpole despite passing directly through it. Prior to the start of Foxboro service in 2019, Boston-Franklin service operated generally hourly. The new service has effectively bifurcated the existing service between Franklin and Foxboro, meaning that each terminus receives bi-hourly service, and the combined section of the line between Boston and Norwood receives hourly service. This is essentially a 50% service cut for Walpole, Norfolk, and Franklin and thus many are unhappy about it, made worse by the fact that Walpole commuters watch Foxboro trains pass right through their station without stopping. Ideally, a second platform would be constructed along the wye to allow Foxboro trains to also stop in Walpole, but such a construction would be difficult due to the sharp curvature of the track. Alternatively, service could be increased to hourly for both Franklin and Foxboro (meaning Norwood and Dedham would receive half-hourly service); this would restore the previous service levels for Walpole, Norfolk, and Franklin but would likely require extending the double track portion of the line from where it currently ends at Norwood Central further south to at least Walpole, and possibly Franklin, to accommodate such a increase. Despite the controversy surrounding the Foxboro service, Walpole remains a great train watching spot as commuter trains both pass straight through and stop at the station, as well as curve around the station to access Foxboro station. Additionally, there are two grade crossings that Foxboro trains encounter; one is a pedestrian walkway to a nearby apartment complex, and the other is the access road to/from the station parking lot which is elevated on an embankment compared to the nearby main road. I was actually not aware that these relatively minor crossings were whistle-posted, and was surprised when the trains started blaring their horns. There was also a CSX Freight train that arrived and pulled around the wye into the yard, but unfortunately I didn't see it approaching in time to get a video. The construction work taking place on the platform is for the installation of a mini-high platform to make the station ADA compliant by the end of 2024.
