Developing Guidelines for Synthetic Data Generation: Lessons from Singapore

CANON presents a discussion with Singapore’s regulator on the development of their recent Guide on Synthetic Data Generation. Vivian Shah of the Singapore Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) provides an overview on the PDPC’s newly launched guide (“Privacy Enhancing Technology (“PET”): Proposed Guide on Synthetic Data Generation”). The PDPC worked closely with industry to develop the joint guide and consulted with trusted experts from academia for their input. This guide is intended to encourage the use of synthetic data by sharing common use case studies and demonstrating the potential benefits to user companies. The guide also proposes good practices that organisations may adopt to help minimise the data protection risks in the generation of synthetic data.
