Grounded Theory - Prof. Gregory Hadley (Niigata University), UCL Institute of Education 13 Oct 2021

"Using Grounded Theory in Applied Linguistics Research" UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics Research Seminar, University College London, 13th October 2021 (Wed), 10-11:30 am, held on Zoom Prof Gregory Hadley, University of Niigata, Japan Hosted by Dr Jim McKinley, UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics Abstract: For over fifty years, the Grounded Theory methodology (GTM) has been used by researchers from a wide range of disciplines for uncovering new insights into social processes shaping human interaction (Denzin & Lincoln 1998 ; Titscher et al. 2000 ; Mills, Bonner & Francis 2006). Within Applied Linguistics and related fields, however, misunderstanding, misuse, and a plethora of poorly written theses claiming to be based on Grounded Theory, have plagued graduate-level research (Hadley 2015). It is common to find thesis supervisors struggling to make sense of the unfamiliar philosophical assumptions, practices, and scholarly literature generated by the methodology, while also striving to guide their students towards producing research that satisfies scholarly expectations within the Applied Linguistics community. These experiences have led some to conclude that GTM requires 'a whole lot of effort for very little gain' (Silva 2005, p. 4), and that graduate students should be encouraged to use more familiar forms of research inquiry. This seminar seeks to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding GTM. Purposes, methodological procedures, relative strengths, and unique weaknesses of GTM will be explained. Important dispositions and conditions necessary for utilizing GTM, together with suggestions for how to successfully carry out a graduate thesis in Applied Linguistics, will also be discussed. It will be argued that, when used in an informed manner with sufficient institutional support, GTM can serve as a helpful matrix for advanced graduate students interested in conducting either qualitative or mixed-methods research on many educational and language-based issues.
