World War II in Chiang Mai Episode 3 - The Chiang Mai Raid and Japanese War Memorial

World War II in Chiang Mai episode 3 is the final part in a series relating back to a day excursion arranged by Life Long Learning at Payap University, on 15 September 2023, when Professor Jack Eisner presented a snap shot of the events in Chiang Mai during 1941 through to 1942. The excursion started at Payap University with a slide show presentation by Adj. Jack Eisner, followed by a tour of Tango Squadron Air Craft Museum within Chiang Mai Airport. We were then taken to Wat Muen San, an historic temple in the Wualai Road area, just south of the city centre, that was used during the Japanese occupation as a hospital and prisoner of war camp. After lunch, we journeyed to Lamphun and saw WWII damage to the San Khayom Railway Bridge and also the crash site of a P40 Aircraft flown by the Ace pilot Jack Newkirk. To complete the story of WWII activity in the area, we finally visited Ban Kad School (Khem Wangrat Rangsarit School) in Mae Wang and walked to the Japanese Soldier Memorial where it is recorded that 18,000 bodied were interned in the well below the monument in 1995 after collecting remains of the soldiers from various sites across the north of Thailand, including the field hospital at the memorial site. This video also elaborates on the wealth of details given by Adj. Jack Eisner on our guided tour. In this video, I introduce the important and interesting character Claire Channault, who was instrumental in the formation of the American Volunteer Group, the Flying Tigers and the huge effort assisting the Chinese Air Force to combat to advances of Japan across S.E. I am extremely grateful to Adj. Jack Eisner for the wealth of knowledge he was able to compile about this subject and for setting me on a course of discovery to find even more detail than I understood during the excursion.
