The Italians in-game are represented by the Lombards, a Germanic tribe who settled the northern and central portion of the Apennine Peninsula following the fall of the western Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire, Byzantines, Saracens, and Normans all fought over the peninsula and Sicily, and in turn imparted influence on the food. However Italian culture was also divided between each of the individual city states where the wide variety of ingredients developed into distinct dishes.
