Our first overnight was along the trail to Red Eagle Lake near St Mary's Glacier. It's a 17+ mile out and back trail that meanders along a lake and near a river. This was our experience. Permits are required for this hike and can be obtained 24 hours in advance at a ranger station or via the yearly lottery which usually opens in April.
