TIStructE & Research Route: Find out more about IStructE membership

The session will explore a journey sharing experience on becoming MIStructE Chartered Member via the Research and Development route, as well as TIStructE Technician Member. The session will go through the IStructE guidance for this route and the speakers personal experience. Dr Mustafa Batikha, PhD, CEng, MIStructE Dr Batikha obtained a PhD in Structural Engineering from Edinburgh University in 2008. He also earned an M.Sc. and a B.Sc. in Structural Engineering from Damascus University in 1998 and 1993. He worked as a full-time academic staff member at Damascus University from 1994 until 2015; then, he moved as an assistant professor of Structural Engineering in the Civil Engineering programme at Heriot-Watt University, Dubai campus. He is also the Associate Director of Research for the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure, and Society since 2016. Moreover, he is the Founding Editor of the Centre of Excellence in Smart and Sustainable Construction (CES2C) Research Bulletin from 2019 until 2023. Dr Batikha is also a consultant engineer at the Syrian Engineer’s Syndicate of Damascus, a chartered member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), a member of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), a member of the national training team at the Syrian Engineers Syndicate and the Teachers’ Syndicate of Damascus. He has been teaching various courses related to Structural Engineering for both UG and PG students, guiding research work individually and supervising research students in different structural engineering fields. In consultancy work, Dr Batikha has completed many high-standard projects in different countries and different areas of materials from 1994 to the present, besides design and structural rehabilitation under earthquake actions. ArunKumar Ashok Kumar, TIStructE Arun has a work experience of over 16 years in the field of BIM Coordination, structural modelling, virtual design as well as construction site experience. He is also actively involved in multidisciplinary design coordination and review of technical submissions prior to construction. Within his current role as a BIM coordinator, Arun leads the BIM 360 design collaboration, project Management and document Management activities, resolving BIM 360 design issues and modelling conflicts, as well as general model coordination and project administration. He worked on a number of major projects, including Salalah International Airport in Oman, Co-ex 2020, Creek Harbour Observation Tower in UAE and Red Sea International Airport in KSA. Arun obtained a Diploma in Civil engineering from the Tamil Nadu State Board of Technical Education and Training in 2008 and became a chartered technician at the Institution of Structural Engineers, TIStructE in 2017.
