Kansas vs No. 4 Baylor | Big 12 | 1.10.24

LAWRENCE, KS - Kansas vs Baylor Written by Avery Hamel | Special to The Journal-World It was only a matter of time before Kansas women’s basketball got its first Big 12 win of the season. But who would have thought it would come in a double-digit upset of one of the nation’s top programs — the undefeated No. 4 Baylor Bears? That’s exactly what happened on Wednesday night, when the Jayhawks outfought Baylor for an 87-66 victory at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks fought hard in the first half, then dominated the second; Taiyanna Jackson reached 1,000 career points in the fourth quarter; the Jayhawks snapped a three-game losing streak; and Kansas once again looked like the caliber of team that piled up win after win in the WNIT last year. Jackson totaled 27 points in 29 minutes of action. She also finished with a double-double with her 19 rebounds. The Jayhawks kept pace with Baylor out of the gate, with Zakiyah Franklin and Taiyanna Jackson scoring their first nine points of the quarter. Holly Kersgieter joined the scoring frenzy with a 3-pointer a minute past the halfway point of the period to tie it at 12 following a Baylor timeout. After holding steady and staying in a one-possession game for the majority of the quarter, the Bears went on a 9-3 run to sink Kansas into a six-point deficit. Luckily, S’Mya Nichols scored her first points of the game, sinking a 3 with less than a minute remaining to make it 21-18 going into the second. A foul by Franklin ended Baylor’s first possession of the second quarter, and the Bears sunk two free throws, but Franklin turned it around on the other end, tooling an impressive layup off a great pass from Jackson. Early on, Kansas saw itself fall behind on the end of some Baylor scoring runs, but six straight points from Kersgieter kept the Jayhawks in the game. An eight-point hole with just under three minutes left in the half was no problem — Kansas fought back with an eight-point run to close out the quarter — capped off by a quick trip down the floor by Nichols, which turned into a buzzer-beating layup to tie it at 37-37. Jackson led the Jayhawks in scoring in the first half with 11 points, and Kersgieter and Nichols were right behind her, with 9 and 8 points respectively. Jackson also led both teams in rebounds with 13 and was the only player to record a block in the half. In the second half, the Jayhawks picked up right where they left off, dominating on both ends of the floor just like they’d done right before halftime. They amassed a 45-37 lead, forcing Baylor to call timeout, and the scoring didn’t stop there, with the Jayhawks rattling off another seven-point run and pushing their advantage to 52-39. The Bears faced yet another long scoring drought, and the Jayhawks had a stretch of about four minutes where they didn’t make a field goal either. But Kansas could still pull off a 10-4 run to put its lead at 16 points — a commanding 63-47 — heading into the game’s final period. Jackson continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, reaching the 20-point mark in the game and 1,000 points in her career. By the halfway point, Baylor had regained some ground, but Kansas never truly took its foot off the gas, riding an unstoppable wave to a more than 20-point victory. Nichols and Kersgieter contributed 22 and 19 points on Wednesday, respectively, and the entire team stood strong on defense. The Jayhawks grabbed 10 steals and four blocks to keep the Bears at bay, holding leading scorer Darianna Littlepage-Buggs to 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting. After its first conference win, Kansas (1-3 Big 12) will look to grab another home win against Oklahoma State (3-1 Big 12) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
